Vote for the five greatest Jordanians of all time

Today I was going to post an entry about the five greates Jordanians of all time. After I thought about King Hussein, I could not think of anyone else.

Isn’t it sad that I did not know that? How many other Jordanians don’t know?

So my fellow Jordanians, bloggers and none bloggeres , I want you to nominate your most favorite Jordanian/s.

To be a Jordanian is to have the Jordanian citizenship, so it does not matter where they are originally from.

Send your vote for the five greatest Jordanians to my email haki(dash)fadi(at)hotmail(dot)com . Please include a link or some information about the nominee if you can.

I am going to announce the results on March 24, 2007.

And please, spread the word.

  30. Well, first I would say that most readers do not seem to realize that Jordanians existed before 1946. King Mesha (I wrote about him) lived almost 5000 years ago and boasted great development and military achievements. The Nabateans built Petra. Aqel Biltaji used to say that Jesus had a Jordanian passport. So, all the names that are being mentioned are specific to modern Jordan, and are not the greatest Jordanians of all time.

A second point I would raise is that many Jordanians are great without being politicians or military leaders (Tereq Nasser and Mustafa Wahbi Tell). How about Dawood Hanania, and his contribution to the introduction of heart surgery and kidney transplants (now routine) into the country? What about distinquished architects like Rasem Badran? Amdulhamid Shoman, the banker who built a world wide banking empire? I would add to this list a statesman (Wasfi Tell) and a military leader (Mashhoor Haditheh). Jordan was built by many distinguished people, many of whom never sought the limelight.

  31. Khalaf, I think Jordanians appreciate culture and sacrifice, hence names like M.Hadeetha, F.Ajlouni, T. Faisal, T.Nasser, E.Hajjaj, E.W.Tell

There seems to be a greater consensus over some persons because their contributions crossed political and geographic lines and they have not only earned the respect of MOST Jordanians, but they have pan-Arab fame (not infamy). Not the case with other names and political figures.

  32. I forgot Abdel Hamid Shoman

  33. Many of you may not know that John Baggot Glubb (aka Glubb Pasha)had one son who was born in Jerusalem and lived as an Arab and championed Arab causes and was actually a hard core leftist. He died in a driving accident in Kuwait in 2004. Now this is a family that has committed its life to Arab causes. From safeguarding the birth of Jordan, to championing Arab underdogs. So while TE Lawrence left for good to live in the UK, Glupp Pasha’s only son lived and died a Jordanian Arab.

  34. Listen you guys,Gloub was Fucking British agent.

  35. Toujan is the best

  36. Toujan is my choice, she is fighting for human rights and women rights for long time. She is my Jordanian Nelson Mandela.

  37. And TE helped the zionist state to steal Palestine.,What a fucking joke TE is.

  38. We should not be surprised when a Brit serves england, but what’s appalling and utterly disgusting is when an Arab serves england and america.

  39. Anonymous@12:05 AM, March 01, 2007 and Alarbi unionist: if you don’t have any constructive things to say, please don’t say anything, please keep it clean AND I didn’t see you posting your choice.

  40. Fadi 7aki,,My choice is not to chose TE,the British agent or Gluob Pasha, both helped to divide the Arab World and give Palestine on sliver plate to the Zionist criminal entity.

  41. I absolutly agree with my brother, the Arab unionist, and my choice still is Toujan Al Faisal.

  42. Crack Blogger,,It’s appalling and disgusting when we see all puppets”our leaders” promote Westren and zionist agendas in our Homeland. They have sold their soul just to stay in power and dance for the white man.Long live Arab unity and Down with the Aeab puppets.Again my choice still is Toujan Al Faisal. Here is Toujan Al Faisal’s website.

  43. King Hussein
Wasfi Al Tal, for crushing the terrorist palestinian factions during Black September. Rest in Peace

  44. (1)i would have to say king talal
though he didn’t rule jordan for a long time god knows why but if you look back through history books you’ll find that his achievements were the best to serve the jordanian community he did some really great things and i think if he stayed longer than he did we would have a lot of things different now
(2)i also vote for king hussein he was a great respected man he was a KING with an open heart for everyone
(3)emad hajaj proved that we can be creative jordanians without having a foreign model to copy from
(4)laith shbelat is a well respective man he fights for his opinion and he keeps hanging on to it and thats worth respecting
thats all i can think of now

  45. I see absolutely no mention of great intellectual and media mogul Mahmoud El-Sharif (rest his soul). El-Sharif was the founder of Jordan Radio and Television and there – at a time when the Arab world was at a slump and in shock of the Israeli invasions – he represented the voice of Jordan at a very difficult time indeed. He also founded the very first culture magazine, that first hosted Wasfi al Tal and other righters. El-Sharif should be honored for creating the platform for Jordanian media in its entirety. He was an intellectual giant. In a recent interview with HE Haidar Mahmoud, he called him “greater than Haikal”.

  46. Mash-hoor haditha
    Laith Shbeilat
    Toujan Faisal
    Tareq naser
    Emad Hajjaj

  47. shaheed mashhour hadythah
    emad hajjaj
    ibrahim nasrallah
    laith shbeilat
    toojan faisal

  48. 1) i guess there seems to be a consensus on Mashhour so I will go for that as my no 1.

    2) King Hussain for his stance in the first iraq war. each leader has a defining moment that becomes his lasting legacy. King faisal, it was the courageous oil embargo. For Gamal abdel Nasser, it was the Suweis Canal liberation, for Arafat it was his last stand, and for king Hussain it was his fateful decision to stand with his people against the war on iraq. THAT WAS TRUE LEADERSHIP!!!! i don’t care what else he may have done, this alone is enough to transform him into a great leader.

    3) emaad hajaj has given jordan’s art a place on the regional map.

    4) toujan elfaisal is a jordanian woman who kicks butt..any butt. smart, strong, and….pretty. SHUT UP ALL OF YOU RADICAL FEMINISTS. LOOKS MATTER.

    5) Layth shbailaat is the most principled man on the political scene in jordan.

    6) Hatem hattar. the voice of jordanian left and world class intellectual.

    7) tarek naser. you have to love this guy’s talent.

    8) jamal abu-hamadan, the jordanian TV screenwriter, who have saved jordanian TV drama from infamy.

    9) i am torn when it comes to TE Lowrance and glubb basha. Could there have been a jordan without them? i think we might have been Syria’s southern province or Irasq’s western province, or Saudi Arabias’ northern province without these two visionaries. credit goes to where credit is due.

    10) mustafa wahbi ettal no doubt helped shape jordanian identity.

NOTE: it’s tough to end the list here since my list of important Jordanians is long so i will go until 10. sorry Fadi.

  54. 1- The average Jordanian citizen who has been trampled upon by the government.

2- jordanian teachers who ensure that, despite failed government policies, young Jordanians have a fighting chance in the regional workforce.

3- jordanian mothers whoes husbands had to leave to find work in foreign lands. these great mothers put up with so much hardships trying to keep the family together.

4- jordanina with no clan or tribal links. these jordanains, unless they migrate, will be stuck in a rotten caste system that denies them and their children the opportunity that children of the privilaged will takje for granted for no other readon but their last name.

5- every Jordanian who lost a loved one to the Israelis colonialists. it takes so much strength of character not to want to seek revenge from the bastards next door.

  66. King Abdullah I. – For his vision in establishing a country and promoting education and stability from first day.

Mustafa Wahbi Al Tal (3arar) – For his influence in defending freedom of speech and promoting equality among all (like the nawaar tribes).

King Hussein – For setting and example in wisdom and tolerance, and for his bravery in pursuing difficult issues like peace process. Simply for being a true leader.

Queen Rania – For her tireless effort in defending women rights and freedom under such harsh conditions and unspoken criticism from people and their representatives.

I t is weird that I can not really add a fifth one who has no relation to the above, seems either the system does not allow for many distinguished people to surface, or we lack the capability to produce enough icons.

I would say King Abdullah II for promoting a prettier face of Jordan than it has, and for trying genuinely to achieve that and for allowing a room for some progressives to play inside a system dominated by conservatives. And I may add Wasfi Al Tal for his capabilities, courage, and love for the country and the people.
